AUGUSTA, Maine —

A proposal at the Maine State House would ban the sale of dogs and cats at pet stores.

A public hearing was held on the bill Thursday afternoon.

The ban would not affect breeders, kennels or animal shelters.

Bill sponsor Ben Chipman said the ban makes sense because there are so many animals in shelters and rescues waiting for good homes.

According to Maine Friends of Animals, just three out of 76 licensed pet stores in Maine sell puppies and kittens.
